A couple of months late, but here's the wrap-up of how the garden turned out this year.
This is what I picked out of the garden one day during the next-to-last weekend in September. It made up about half of our carrot/beet/pea harvest. Our carrots did well. About half were eaten as snacks by me and Grayson, or cooked in meals, and the other half are now pickled and I'll snack on them through the winter. The cold Alaska growing season turns the carrots very sweet, and creates a good flavor. The few pea plants I planted did well, but I need to choose a better variety for the climate next year - the taste was a little lacking. The beets did well, but would be better if I had thinned them out early on.
We harvested the potatoes September 19th this hear. As usual, the Yukon Gold spuds produced a bumper crop for our little plots. Enough to fill four potato bags to the brim, and we'll have plenty to use through the upcoming year, all stored in our cool temp'd crawl space, which serves as our 'root cellar'.
Our harvest started in late August / early September, when I started picking the few blueberries from the bushes we just planted this Summer. And I enjoyed trying out the first carrot of the year, along with the few onions that came up (the onions were tasty, but I only had a few survive - - I planted them too deep, and will need to remember next year to keep them shallow). No pics of the rhubarb or the lettuce, but the garden produced plenty of both this year. Lots of rhubarb crisp for dessert, and we had plenty of lettuce for all our needs for the Summer.
These beets went into a jar of pickled beets and eggs. The rest of our beets were pickled by themselves, and they didn't last long.
Below are some pics of the garden plots comparing the early sprouts to harvest time.
The potatoes grew fast in our two little plots, and the last pic was taken just before we started digging them up.
These two above pics show the small plot I started along the back side of the house. Started it very late (July), but it had good sun exposure and produced plenty of carrots, beets, peas and rhubarb (but the tomatoes, cucumbers and corn only produced leafy plants - no produce.....will avoid corn next year, and will start the tomatoes/cucumbers inside to give them more time).
This (above) was the earliest plot I planted, and it didn't produce much this year. Will have to test the soil before planting next year.
Plenty of wildflowers sprouted throughout the Summer.
One final picture of a sunflower that sprouted from the bird-feeder overflow....was hoping it would head, but it didn't have time before the freeze. Maybe I'll plant some next year.
