Historic Knik

Our final destination for the day was Knik Hall and the Musher's Hall of Fame. The historic building was pretty neat to check out and Landon got his picture taken on "Old Joe Redington's" sled. The abandoned boat is also Joe Redington's, apparently he had it anchored out there when the 1964 earthquake struck and changed the ground level. Unfortunately, the abandoned boat has been pillaged but it makes for an interesting shot...I will have to try it again with a zoom lens! So who is Joe Redington anyway? Well he is pretty infamous around here. He is known as the "Father of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race." He originally hailed from Pennsylvania. After serving in the Army in World War II, he took part in the Homestead Act and settled in the Knik area of Alaska. He worked in reclamation and recovery of downed aircrew and acted as a hunting guide. After learning the history of the Iditarod trail he helped create the Iditarod Race with Dorothy Page of Wasilla.
