Independence Mine

What better way to celebrate Independence Day than to tour Independence Bowl and Independence Mine State Historical Site. The area is an abandoned gold mine. Panning for gold is legal in the park with a pale and shovel. Hard rock coal mixed in the quartz was once mined out of the area. The mine temporarily closed in World War II, only to be deemed unprofitable after the war. The hikes are amazing! By the way if you saw the "Alaska" episode of Mythbusters, the lodge where the cabin fever scene was filmed is just below the mine. The show described Hatcher's Pass as way out in the middle of nowhere. It is really only about 15 miles from the house!
